Mental Health Support
The well-being of our students is important to the college. We strive to do all we can to make our students feel safe and supported during their studies. A crisis is a time of intense emotional difficulty, trouble, or danger. We help those experiencing an emotional/mental health crisis by providing immediate and short-term assistance.
What We Do
We work to make sure a student is safe in the event of a mental health crisis. This can include referrals to low or no cost community-based support services or recommendations to seek immediate assistance in an emergency room or nearby behavioral health facility.
We also partner with community agencies to offer on campus support group sessions. Our students can get assistance with:
- anxiety and depression
- suicidal ideation, cutting and eating disorders
- mental health decline
- substance abuse
- navigating domestic violence or home related stressors
- grief support
- stress and coping skills
- re-entry to college after experiencing a mental health hospitalization
What should you do if you are experiencing the situations listed above?
- Use the resources the college has to offer to get the help you need. If you need help accessing these resources, contact the Student Relations Office.
- Seek support through SC Be Well if you are enrolled in credit classes.
- Don’t be afraid to tell your family, friends, and instructors you are struggling.
- Ask your instructors if they can be flexible with assignment deadlines, but remember that may not be possible in every course. Where possible, ask for this before the deadline has passed.
- Decide if a reduced course load is right for you. If you’re utilizing Financial Aid funding, find out from their office if a reduction will impact your aid.
What can members of the campus community do?
Let others know you care about them and their well-being by:
- Provide a listening ear.
- Giving flexibility whenever possible on assignment deadlines.
- Submit an SC aware report if you want the college to offer support to a student or are concerned about a student’s well-being. If you are concerned about a college employee, please contact Human Resources or refer them to the Employee Assistance plan.
- Refer to the imminent danger information on this page to determine additional actions you should take.
