Attendance and Participation
Overview
Regular class attendance and participation is necessary for you to be successful. Students are expected to attend all classes except in the event of illness or an unavoidable emergency.
Students enrolled in certain programs may have specific attendance requirements. Consult your program’s handbook, limited enrollment program application and/or your course syllabus for more information. Some individual courses or instructors may also have special attendance requirements which should be stated on the syllabus.
Students are prohibited from attending courses for which they are not registered. Instructors can prevent students from attending or completing course work if they are not on the official class roster.
Sanctioned College Activities vs. Emergency and Unforeseen Circumstances
Students are responsible for meeting all class requirements regardless of absences and/or tardiness from class. Contact your instructor prior to any absences whenever possible. Do not wait until after you miss a class or deadline to contact your instructor.
Students are responsible for arranging to complete all work before participating in athletic events, field trips or other college-sponsored events. Students are also responsible for contacting their instructors in the event that they have an unforeseen circumstance preventing them from attending or participating. Any decisions about whether or not a student can make up missed work, or turn in an assignment late for grading are at the discretion of your instructor.
Dropping and Withdrawing
It is important that students do not simply stop attending classes. If you enroll in classes and do not wish to complete them, you should officially drop or withdrawal from your courses.
Failure to drop or withdrawal by the published deadlines could result in 0.0 or No Show (NS) grades being issued by your instructor.
What is a No Show (NS) Grade?
Instructors will issue a final course grade of NS, signifying No Show at the end of the third week of the course when the student meets the NS criteria listed below.
NS GRADE CRITERIA used at the end of Week 3
A final No Show “NS” grade shall be issued after the third week of class to students who register and do not meet the criteria for attendance. The criterion for attendance is defined as follows:
- Students are considered in attendance if they have participated in an academically related activity or attended at least one scheduled course meeting.
The “NS” grade will not be used in computing the grade point average.
Note: Once an NS grade is submitted, it will immediately appear on the student’s transcript. Students who are not on your roster or have received an NS grade are not allowed to sit in or access your class.
How does the NS Grade Impact Students?
The “NS” grade does not have a negative impact on the Schoolcraft College grade point average, but can have a negative impact on a student’s ability to meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards as it relates to Financial Aid.
Students using Financial Aid funding such as Pell grants, loans, or scholarships can have their awards adjusted if they do not attend their classes and participate regularly. Adjustments can result in the student owing money back to the college, as outlined in the Financial Aid rules and requirements.
Students not using Financial Aid funds forfeit the tuition and fees paid when they receive an NS grade.
Can Students Avoid Getting NS Grades?
Yes. Students who attend class and submit academic work regularly will not receive NS grades.
What Can I Do Once an NS grade is on my transcript?
NS grades cannot be removed if they are issued in accordance with the College policy. If you believe that you have received an NS grade in error, contact your instructor as outlined in our Academic Matters process.
Students that earn NS grades due to extenuating personal circumstances may want to consider appealing their NS grades using our Extenuating Circumstances Appeal process.
