About / Academic Standing

Academic Standing

Schoolcraft College has an expectation that students will attend class regularly, be active participants in their education, avail themselves of services and resources that support the learning process, and make every effort to be successful. Students who fail to achieve or sustain good standing will be placed on academic probation or dismissal and will be notified by the college. Students on academic probation and dismissal may be subject to additional requirements in an effort to improve academic performance or may be asked to take some time away from the college. Academic probation and dismissal may affect a student’s ability to enroll in certain programs, receive financial aid and/or veterans funding. The official record (transcript) will reflect these statuses.

Academic Caution

The first time a student earns a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below a 2.00, they will be placed on academic caution for the next semester. Students on academic caution are required to meet with an Academic Advisor to identify barriers to learning and develop an academic success plan.

Academic Probation

Any student on academic caution who does not earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher for the following semester will be placed on academic probation. Students on academic probation are required to meet with an Academic Advisor to connect them to the appropriate Learning Support Services department and/or staff and amend the academic success plan.

Academic Suspension

If the student has a cumulative GPA below a 2.0 for three (3) consecutive semesters, the student will be reviewed by the Academic Standing Committee to determine if they should remain on probation or be placed on academic suspension for the upcoming semester. A student placed on academic suspension has the right to appeal by submitting a request to the Chief Student Services Officer. If the appeal is accepted, the student can return for the upcoming semester with an academic probation status. If the appeal is denied, the academic suspension status remains and is in effect for one semester. Upon return from academic suspension, the student will be placed on academic probation until the GPA is 2.0 or higher.

Students receiving financial aid assistance or veteran’s benefits must meet the specific academic requirements which determine continuation for these programs.
