Massage Techniques 2 (2-4) 4 Cr. Hrs.

Course Description

In this course, students will learn to provide a smooth and flowing full body therapeutic massage. Adaptations and modifications of massage for diverse client populations will be examined and practiced. Specialty techniques such as myofascial release and reflexology will be used to build upon the primary massage strokes taught in the foundational course.

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Perform a full body therapeutic massage integrating traditional and specialty techniques.
  • Explain the physiologic mechanisms of complementary bodywork systems.
  • Categorize indications, contraindications and pathologies common to special populations.
  • Conduct an interview and assessment to determine modifications needed.
  • Use a clinical reasoning model to determine appropriate interventions.
  • Organize necessary data to create a safe and effective treatment plan.
  • Adapt a massage to best serve special populations.
  • Demonstrate self-care activities for a client to maintain massage benefits.
  • Relate physiologic and emotional states to health, illness, disease and trauma.
  • Correlate holistic philosophy and holistic approaches to health.
  • Evaluate the use of hot and cold hydrotherapy as a treatment modality.
  • Implement a self-care strategy for health maintenance.
  • Identify personal perceptions of energy.
