Medical Office Clinical Procedures (3-3) 4 Cr. Hrs.

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce the student to all clinical aspects of working in an ambulatory care setting. The following is a short list of what students will learn in this course: examination techniques (including vital signs), medication administration, minor surgery procedures, sterilization procedures, how to perform medical tests, first aid, maintenance of equipment and special dietary needs. Students will spend an additional two hours per week in a lab setting. Note: Students must begin MA 195 within six months of completing MA 175 and MA 180.


(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the technique for obtaining body measurements.
  • Apply the theories of sterile techniques.
  • Demonstrate use of instruments.
  • Demonstrate methods of infection control and safety.
  • Administer medications (all routes).
  • Demonstrate maintenance of equipment in the clinical area.
  • Ensure documentation of all patient encounters.
  • Identify special dietary needs.
  • Simulate various medical tests, e.g. ECG's, pulmonary function test.
  • Identify the rules of medication administration.
  • Apply First Aid procedures.
  • Select proper sites for medication administration.
  • Incorporate critical thinking skills when interacting with patients.
  • Apply effective communication skills.
  • Calculate proper dosages for medication administration.
  • Support patients and providers before, during and after treatment.
  • Perform compliance reporting.
