Network Security Fundamentals

Course Description

This course is designed to provide students a fundamental understanding of network security principles and implementation. A variety of activities will reinforce the technologies used and principles involved in creating a secure computer network environment.


(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify risks, threats and mitigation procedures for computerized systems.
  • Identify attacks, vulnerabilities and defenses for wired local area networks.
  • Identify attacks, vulnerabilities and defenses for wireless networks.
  • Identify the fundamental principles of access controls and authentication.
  • Examine procedures for performing computer network security vulnerability assessments.
  • Examine procedures for conducting computer and network security audits.
  • Identify cryptographic protocols and other technologies for public key infrastructure.
  • Identify best practices for business continuity planning.
  • Identify governmental policies and legislation pertaining to computer and network security.
