Computer Aided Design
This course is designed to teach the student the concepts and standard practices involved in the creation of detail and assembly drawings. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (G.D. and T.) philosophy will be employed for controlling variations. Sketching and computer-aided drafting (CAD) will be the tools for communicating mechanical product and tool information. The student will create 3D models and 2D drawings. Simple assemblies will be constructed and analyzed using previously created parts. Topics to be covered will be dimensioning standards and practices, tolerancing methods, tolerance stack-up evaluation, G.D. and T. methods, 3D modeling, and 2D and data extraction from 3D models.
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Apply ANSI standards and traditional practices to the application of dimensions to a part drawing.
- Determine appropriate tolerances to be applied to a feature of a part based on a given manufacturing method.
- Determine appropriate surface finish specifications to be applied to a feature of a part.
- Implement common dimensioning methods such as datum, coordinate and true position.
- Interpret Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing symbols for gauging.
- Select Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing symbols to be used for a part and drawing.
- Determine appropriate datums based on a parts function.
- Determine appropriate fastening methods for assemblies (glue, welds, mechanical fasteners, etc.).
- Utilize a CAD system's associative dimensioning capabilities in detailing a part.
- Create 2 D orthograhic, section or auxiliary views from a 3 D model.
- Determine the boundary conditions for a feature based on the application of a positional control.
- Insert Datum Targets onto a part.
- Interpret composite tolerancing control frames.
- Calculate positional tolerance values to be assigned for a floating fastener.
- Calculate positional tolerance values to be assigned for a fixed fastener.
- Calculate projected tolerance zones.
- Determine bonus tolerances accrued with material conditions applied to features.
- Determine datum shifts accrued with material conditions applied to datums.
- Calculate tolerance stackup of an individual feature.
- Generate Assembly drawings.
- Calculate tolerance stackup of an assembly.
