Chapter 30

Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty (MGIB)

Veterans must have entered active duty on or after July 1, 1985, and must have made monthly contributions while on active duty. The MGIB-AD program – sometimes known as the original Montgomery GI Bill® – provides education benefits to Veterans and Service members who have at least two years of active duty.  Students must verify their enrollment at the end of each month through W.A.V.E. (Web Automated Verification of Enrollment).

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)

This program is for eligible disabled veterans that has a service-related disability rating of 10% or higher. You may receive vocational rehabilitation and employment services to help with job training, employment accommodations, resume development, and job seeking skills coaching.

Chapter 33

Post 9/11 GI Bill®

Provides financial support for education and housing to eligible individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.  You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill®.

Transfer of Entitlement

Provides financial support for education and housing to eligible individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or iThe transferability option under the Post-9/11 GI Bill® allows eligible Service-members to transfer unused benefits to their spouses of dependent children. The request to transfer unused GI Bill® benefits to eligible dependents must be completed while serving as an active member of the Armed Forces.

Fry Scholarship

Provides Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits to the eligible children and surviving spouses of Service-members who died in the line of duty while on active duty after September 10, 2001.

Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance

Offers education and training to qualified dependents of the Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled because of a service-related condition or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition.

Chapter 1606

Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve

Provides education and training benefits to eligible members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Eligibility for this program is determined by the Selected Reserve Components and VA makes the payments.

REAP (Reserve Education Assistance Program)

Provides educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to war or national emergency declared by the president or Congress on or after September 11, 2001.  This program expires November 2019.

Michigan National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program

rovides tuition assistance to members of the Michigan National Guard who are attending any public or private college, university, vocational school, technical school located in Michigan.

Military Tuition Assistance

Paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.  Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process and restrictions. Contact your CO or ESO in your branch for details on application processes.
