Student Code of Conduct and Resolution Process
- Students have rights and privileges and enjoy freedoms guaranteed under United States and Michigan law. These include, but are not limited to, freedom of expression and the right to peaceable assembly.
- As members of the Schoolcraft College community, students are free to access and benefit from the educational opportunities, resources, support services, and extracurricular activities offered by the college.
- Students facing disciplinary action by the college have the right to due process.
- It is every student’s responsibility to avoid conduct that restricts other individuals from enjoying their rights, privileges and freedoms, or from accessing and benefitting from the college’s offerings.
- It is every student’s responsibility to avoid conduct which interferes with the Board of Trustees, its representatives and college faculty and staff in the performance of their duties.
- Students are responsible for being familiar with, and complying with, the Student Code of Conduct, and for upholding its core values of respect and responsibility.
Core Values of Student Conduct
A college is a community and students have a significant impact on the quality of that community’s shared experience. The Student Code of Conduct is grounded in two core values:
Respect: Schoolcraft students honor the truth in all of their feelings and show positive regard for the worth, dignity and property of others.
Responsibility: Schoolcraft students are given and accept a high level of responsibility to self, to others and to the community.
Purpose of the Student Code of Conduct
The Student Code of Conduct exists to:
Protect the health and safety of the campus community.
Protect the rights and freedoms of members of the campus community.
Maintain a supportive and cordial campus environment.
Support the effective operation of college functions.
Help students learn and grow from the college experience.
- When a student is alleged to have violated the Code of Conduct, the student receives due process, which includes 1) Receiving a written description of their possible Code violations and 2) Having their cases heard by one or more objective decision-makers.
- The process begins with an inquiry by the college; if the inquiry produces information that suggests a violation may have occurred, the college and the student participate in a process called Resolution.
- Resolution can be achieved through mutual consent or through a formal hearing.
- Resolution leads to one of two possible outcomes. The student is found either “not responsible” or “responsible” of violating the Code.
- Students found responsible may be sanctioned.
Learning Outcomes for Resolution Process
Students participating in Resolution are encouraged to take hold of the process and transform it into learning. Specifically, after completing this process students should be able to:
- Identify the rule violations in question.
- Describe at least one lesson or insight gained from the experience.
- Assess how their behavior was or was not consistent with their self-image.
- List their educational and/or career goals.
- Explain how their time at Schoolcraft can help them achieve their goals.
If appropriate for the case, student should also be able to:
- List at least two methods for resolving conflict.
- Describe personal or cultural biases that may have influenced their actions.
