Conference of Western Wayne (CWW) Firefighter Testing Program
The Fire Training Institute of Schoolcraft College, in collaboration with the Schoolcraft Testing Center, administer a pre-employment certification test. This test evaluates the written and physical agility qualifications of firefighter candidates. Upon successful completion of the process, a firefighter candidate’s ability to perform the critical reading and physical skills required of the entry-level firefighter position are validated.
Successful completion of both these tests may be required by the communities of the CWW and other participating municipalities. Individual communities may require other qualifications at the time of applying.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
Effective January 1, 2008: all entry level firefighter candidates must take the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) through the Conference of Western Wayne Firefighter Testing Program for all participating communities.
- All candidates are provided an opportunity to attend at least two (2) CPAT orientation sessions within the eight (8) week period preceding the test. During these orientation sessions, the candidates will receive “hands-on” familiarity with the test apparatus.
- The candidates are also given an opportunity to perform two (2) timed practice runs of the CPAT before a final test. Timed practice runs can be used for official successful passing tests because the appropriate number of CPAT proctors will be used during the timed practice runs.
- The orientation and practice programs described above must be treated as a mandatory condition for candidates, you can be excused from these conditions upon Schoolcraft College receiving a written and signed waiver provided by Schoolcraft College from the candidate on a voluntary basis. This waiver will acknowledge that the orientation and practice program was made available to all candidates on an equal basis and indicate that the candidate expressly waives, on a knowing and voluntary basis, the opportunity to participate in the orientation and timed practice runs prior to the final test.
The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is a sequence of eight separate events, requiring progression along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. The pass/fail sequence was developed to determine a firefighter candidate’s ability to perform essential simulated tasks consistent with firefighting. A confirmation packet is provided at registration. Please note:
- A valid Government Issued photo ID with your first and last name is required.
- Bring your own drinks, but pre-hydrate since opportunity to drink will be limited.
- Contact tracing information (your name, email, and phone number are required for entry).
- A signed physician’s release form is required for the CPAT
- Download a free orientation guide (PDF) containing recommended exercises
- Required clothing for CPAT testing – long pants (no shorts), closed toe/heel shoes (no sandals)
- May only use CPAT issued equipment (gloves, helmets, vests, etc.)
- Only testers are allowed in the building (no family, friends, cheering squads)
All CPAT tests are held at the Public Safety Training Complex, 31777 Industrial Road, Livonia, MI 48150.
