The Phi Theta Kappa Society is an international honorary scholastic society serving two-year colleges offering associate degree programs. The society has more than 1100 chapters in the United States and abroad. Chapters are governed by the International Society, which is headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi. Schoolcraft College held its first initiation ceremony on September 22, 1966 to become an official chapter and was given the name, Omicron Iota.  


Membership Qualifications

To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and have already completed 12 credit hours above the 100 level. The Chapter offers two types of membership.

General Membership: Meet the above stated criteria and pay a one-time membership dues fee of $110.00. 

Par Excellence Membership: Meet the criteria for General Membership but also participate in service events and projects to earn six “stars”. You will earn one “star” for every four hours of service. Once you have completed the six “stars”, you will be refunded $35.00 of the membership dues fee.

Once you have completed the above guidelines, you will be officially initiated into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Every member will receive:

  • Professional membership certificate
  • Gold plate pin with Phi Theta Kappa insignia
  • Subscription to society publications
  • Phi Theta Kappa status listed on your transcript
  • Gold seal for your diploma
  • Eligible to wear Phi Theta Kappa honors regalia at graduation
  • Eligible for transfer scholarships to four year universities only available to Phi Theta Kappa members

The chapter and the society seek to provide an opportunity for the development of leadership and service, an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas, and stimulation for continuing academic excellence. The society encourages education at the two-year level, as well as for advanced degrees.

  • Scholarship: Become part of an intellectual climate, which promotes an interchange of ideas and ideals; and strives for academic and social excellence.
  • Leadership: Communication and decision making skills are developed through commitment, leadership, teamwork and learning from others.
  • Service: College and community-based services which enhance interpersonal, cultural, and self-satisfaction among members.
  • Fellowship: Involvement with fellow members in the chapter, people in the college and community, and national programs builds bond of friendship that last beyond college.
