Stormwater Management

Schoolcraft College encourages students, employee’s and visitors to learn more about safe storm water management and reducing contamination in the storm water system. The following resources provide further information on protecting our water.

Alliance of Rouge Communities Collaboration (ARC)

Schoolcraft College is part of the ARC MS4 collaborative group.  The Rouge River Watershed is home to more than one million people and encompasses 466 square miles, running through the most densely populated and urbanized land area in southeast Michigan. The Rouge River is a tributary to the Detroit River and its four branches total approximately 126 miles of waterways and include over 400 lakes, impoundments and ponds. More than 50 miles of the river flows through parklands, making the Rouge River one of the most publicly accessible rivers in the country.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Household hazardous waste is any product known to cause adverse effects to humans or the environment. These include items that are ignitable, corrosive, reactive or toxic. Some of the most common household hazardous products are cleaners and aerosols, paint, varnish and thinners, herbicides and pesticides, along with batteries and automotive fluids.

While Oakland County does not have a county-wide household hazardous waste disposal program, NO HAZ, RRRASOC and SOCRRA service many local communities. Several communities operate independent programs. For more information, visit Advantage Oakland’s Waste & Recycling webpage.

Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP)

What is a Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP)? In simplest terms, it’s a plan that helps reduce pollution and contamination during construction projects by controlling runoff of rainwater or melted snow into streets, lawns, rivers, and other sites. The SWMP details methods Schoolcraft College will utilize to manage the flow and quality of water runoff using minimum control measures and Best Management Practices, or BMP’s. After completion, the plan must be submitted and reviewed for approval to obtain a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit.
