Why does the College have a proposal on the November 3, 2026 ballot?

All Michigan community colleges are funded through a combination of local property tax, tuition and appropriations from the State of Michigan. Schoolcraft College is currently operating under the approved millage rate that was originally set in 1986 and restored by community voters in 2018. This is set to expire in 2028, and the College is looking to extend millage for another 10 years.

Is this proposal going to raise taxes for property owners?

No, this proposal is just a renewal and will not raise taxes for property owners.

What exactly is Schoolcraft College requesting?

The College is asking permission to continue to collect the full amount of millage approved back in 1986 that was restored in 2018, which is 2.27 mills.

If the original proposal does not expire until 2028, why is Schoolcraft College asking for a renewal in 2026?

By asking voters to extend the renewal this year, Schoolcraft College can better plan financially for its upcoming annual budgets. That allows for better planning and financial stability, and to take advantage of multi-year economies, leading to more responsible usage of resources.

If approved, what will this cost the average homeowner?

This renewal will not cost homeowners anything additional to what they are currently paying. A property with an estimated market value of $300,000 pays approximately $340 annually in taxes that support Schoolcraft College.

What happens if the voters don’t approve this renewal?

Schoolcraft would be adversely impacted and would look very different than it does today. It could likely result in the following:

  • An increase in tuition and fees
  • A decrease in services for students
  • Elimination of community programs that are currently free or offered at a subsidized rate
What has Schoolcraft College done since the 2018 restoration was approved as part of its fiscal stewardship?
  • A freeze on tuition and fees for the 2025/2026 academic year.
  • Continued to pursue non-tax revenue generating efforts, including on-campus development projects that are financed by private investments – not College funds – that has resulted in alternative revenue flowing back into the College. This amount is projected to continue growing and advocating with the State of Michigan to increase grant, scholarships and appropriations to reduce tuition increases passed on to students.
  • Increased its community involvement with local businesses, chambers, events and sponsorships.
  • Increased its community programs, many free or offered at a reduced rate by the College.
  • Increase its community-relevant programs in health care, including partnering with local health care systems to provide employment opportunities for Schoolcraft College graduates and others.
When is the election?

At the General Election, Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., and early voting is also available as provided by law. To vote in the Nov.ember3 election, you must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 18 years of age by Election Day, be a resident of Michigan and the Schoolcraft College district and registered to vote.

The College district includes residents who live in the Clarenceville, Garden City, Livonia, Northville and Plymouth-Canton public school districts, as well as a small part of the Novi school district. Please contact your city or township clerk or contact any Secretary of State office to register to vote. Those who first register to vote within 14 days of an election must register in person at their local clerk’s office, providing proof of residency documentation.

Where and how do I vote?

At your regular polling location or via absentee ballot. Your polling place can be found on your voter registration card provided by your local township or city Clerk. If you are unsure of your precinct location, please contact your city or township Clerk or visit the Michigan Voter Information Center online at mvic.sos.state.mi.us.
