Firearm & Safety Training for Citizens

Firearm & Safety Training for Citizens

We offer quality, professional instruction for students of all backgrounds and experience levels. Beginners will feel comfortable in our introduction classes, and experienced shooters will feel challenged in our Precision Shooting class. We offer Concealed Pistol License classes for those seeking to enhance their firearms knowledge or obtain their CPL for the first time.

Our Instructors

All beginner classes have a 2:1 student to instructor ratio to ensure you receive the individual attention you need to feel confident on the range. Our instructors are state certified law enforcement firearms instructors and are currently training officers and police academy recruits, in addition to their time instructing citizens in safe firearm handling and self-defense techniques.

Schoolcraft College is proud to offer state-of-the-art training facilities and simulators in a controlled and safe environment.

  • Our 20-bay gun range offers targets up to 25 yards.
  • Our firearms training simulator features a 300-degree immersive training environment with high-definition screens and surround sound.
  • Our training room offers 4500 square feet of space to use in self-defense training.

Class Information

What class is right for me?

For students without any previous firearm handling experience, we suggest our Introduction to Handgun & Pistol class. If students would like to progress through a series of classes to build their skill level, we suggest the following order:

  1. CES   0999  – Introduction to Handgun & Pistol Handling
  2. CES2 0050 – Precision Shooting for Handgun & Pistol
  3. CES2 0014 – Firearms Training for Concealed Pistol License
  4. CES   0864 – Refresher for CPL

Other classes to take at any time, in any order:

  • CES2 0016 – Introduction to Firearm Training Simulator
  • CES2 0015 – Cleaning & Storing Your Firearm
  • CES2 0126 – Self Defense
  • CES2 0114 – Self-Defense: Personal Safety Training for Women
  • CES2 0113 – Self-Defense: Armed Assailant Training
Where are firearm & safety training classes held?

All firearm & safety training classes take place in the Firearms Training Center which is located at the Public Safety Training Complex (PSTC) at 31623 Industrial Drive, Livonia, 48150. View PSTC map.

Is there a waitlist for firearm & safety training classes?

Unfortunately, due to the large number of classes that we handle in any given semester, we are unable to keep a waitlist. We suggest that you continually check our website for class additions and/or changes in enrollment.

What are the age requirements?

Students must be 18 years or older. For all CPL classes, students must be 21 years or older as required by law in the state of Michigan to possess a CPL.

Firearm Use

Do I need to have experience with a firearm to take a class?

No. Our Introduction to Handgun & Pistol Handling and Introduction to Firearm Handing Simulator classes are great for beginners. Our self-defense classes do not use firearms.

Can I bring my own firearm?

Yes, students can bring their own firearm. It must be a reliable, unloaded handgun in case, with a caliber of .22 or above (but not larger than a .45 caliber). All weapons will be inspected on the firing range.

Can I rent a firearm?

Limited firearms are available for use during class. There is no rental fee.

Can I use more than one firearm during the class?

This is up to the instructor’s discretion.

I am taking this class with a friend. Can we share a firearm?

Yes.

Ammunition and Equipment

How much ammunition will I need for my class?

Ammunition needs vary depending upon class. Please refer to individual class descriptions for ammunition requirements. If using a pistol, you will need one extra magazine in addition to the specified amount of ammunition. Students must bring their own ammunition to class.

What should I bring to my firing range class?

Please wear a long sleeve shirt, full-length pants, baseball-style cap, and closed-toe shoes. Please bring or rent from Schoolcraft College a reliable, unloaded handgun, and ear and shatter resistant eye protection.

Firing Range & Simulators

Do all classes use the firing range?

No. Introduction to Firearms Training Simulator, Cleaning & Storing Your Firearm, and self-defense classes do not use the range and no previous firearm experience is required.

What is the Firearm Training Simulator?

The Firearms virtual training simulator provides a 300-degree immersive training environment with high-definition and surround sound. Imagery is projected on five screens to provide a true-to-life experience that creates heightened awareness in a training environment. No live firearms are used during the simulation.

Are your instructors certified?

All instructors are state certified law enforcement firearms instructors.
