Event Planning
Schoolcraft College Personal & Professional Learning Department has partnered with Christopher & Company to offer a certificate in Event Planning. To qualify for the certificate, students must successfully complete four required courses:
- CES2 1584 Introduction to Event Planning (offered Winter)
- CES2 1517 Wedding Planning: Creating the Memories of a Lifetime (offered Winter)
- CES2 1589 Special Event Design and Décor (offered Spring)
- CES2 1616 Event Planning Practical Experience (offered Spring or Summer)
The courses are designed to accommodate all levels of education and experience, from entry level students to individuals in the event planning industry. Our instructors work hands-on with you throughout; sharing their knowledge, experience, and skills to help you develop event planning expertise. Many of our students have had success in the industry after earning this certificate.
Successful completion in CES2 1584, CES2 1517 and CES2 1589 are required for enrollment in CES2 1616 Event Planning Practical Experience.

Do I need to fulfill any prerequisites prior to registering for any of these classes?
There are no prerequisites for Introduction to Event Planning and Wedding Planning: Creating the Memories of a Lifetime. It is recommended that you take Introduction to Event Planning prior to taking Special Event Design & Décor. The prerequisites for Event Planning Practical Experience are Introduction to Event Planning, Wedding Planning: Creating the Memories of a Lifetime, and Special Event Design & Décor.
It is recommended that students complete the classes in the following order: Introduction to Event Planning, Wedding Planning: Creating the Memories of a Lifetime, Special Event Design & Décor, Event Planning Practical Experience.
What is considered successful completion of the training program?
Attendance in 90% of the classes and successful completion of class projects/assignments.
What industries need event planners?
Many people think event planners are only needed for weddings. This is not true; there is a need for event planners in non-profits, corporations, associations and municipalities.
What is involved in the Event Planning Practical Experience class?
Students will complete 6 hours in the classroom learning about etiquette, professional responsibilities and legal ramifications for event planners. The final 12 hours will be spent completing practical experience in planning and implementing an event in partnership with an offsite vendor. The instructors will provide all information regarding the practical experience on the first night of class.
Will I need to purchase any books for this program?
Yes. Students are required to purchase books for the Wedding Planning: Creating the Memories of a Lifetime and Special Event Design & Décor classes which are available for purchase at the Schoolcraft College Bookstore.
How long will it take me to complete my certificate?
Students must complete all four classes to earn a certificate. The quickest the certificate could be completed is within two semesters. Students may also elect to take the class at a slower pace and complete over a longer period of time.
Is job placement available?
Schoolcraft College does not provide job placement; however, our Career Services Center specializes in assisting students in their job search.
