Career Opportunities in Medical Billing and Coding

Medical billing and coding professionals are essential to support healthcare organizations and the administrative systems behind patient care.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment of medical records specialists to grow 8% nationally from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations. Approximately 14,000 openings are projected each year, on average, over the decade. The median annual wage for medical records specialists was $51,140 in May 2025. In Michigan, the average salary for a medical biller is $64,843 per year, according to Indeed.

Certification, experience, and specialization can influence earning potential. According to AAPC’s 2025 Salary Survey, noncertified respondents reported average annual earnings of $61,022, while certified respondents averaged $66,186—an 8.5% difference.

Healthcare also represents a significant part of the Detroit-area workforce. According to May 2025 BLS data, healthcare practitioners and technical occupations accounted for 6.7% of employment in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metropolitan area, compared with 6.3% nationally. These occupations earned a mean hourly wage of $49.11 in the region.

Medical Billing and Coding FAQs

What is medical billing and coding? What does a medical biller and coder do?

Medical billing and coding professionals help translate healthcare services into the standardized information needed for patient records, insurance claims, and reimbursement. Medical coders review clinical documentation and assign codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services. Medical billers use that information to prepare, and process claims with insurance payers.

Professionals may focus on one of these functions or perform both, depending on the position and healthcare organization.

Where do you work as a medical biller and coder?

Medical billers and coders can work throughout the healthcare industry, including in hospitals, physicians’ offices, health insurance companies, specialty pharmacies, medical supply companies, consulting firms, and organizations specializing in billing and coding.

Some positions may also offer remote-work opportunities because medical records, coding systems, and claims are commonly managed electronically. Work arrangements vary by employer, position, and experience.

What happens when I complete the course?

After successfully completing the course, you will earn a Certificate of Completion through Schoolcraft College.

You will also receive applicable study materials and a voucher for your choice of the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam from AAPC, Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam from AHIMA, or Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam from NHA.

Prerequisites & Certification Requirements

There are no prerequisites to take this course. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent to sit for national certification exams. For this reason, it is recommended that you meet this requirement before enrolling.

Upon successful course completion, you can select a voucher for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam offered by AAPC, the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam offered by AHIMA, or the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam offered by NHA.

You will also receive applicable study materials for your selected certification pathway.

Certification Pathway Options

This course prepares you for three professional certification options: the CPC credential offered by AAPC, the CCA credential offered by AHIMA, and the CBCS credential offered by NHA.

The CPC focuses on professional medical coding, the CCA demonstrates foundational coding competency across healthcare settings, and the CBCS validates knowledge of medical billing and coding. The three pathways give you the flexibility to select the credential that best matches your professional goals.

If you choose the CPC pathway, the course also includes access to AAPC’s Practicode Practicum, which provides hands-on coding practice and can help fulfill experience requirements associated with the CPC-A apprentice designation.
