Canadian Border Commuters

Our institution welcomes students who reside in Canada and commute to the United States to pursue full-time or part-time academic study. F-1 border commuter status allows eligible Canadian citizens to attend classes in the U.S. while maintaining residence in Canada. Because this status carries specific requirements, it is important to understand and follow all regulations to remain in compliance.

If this is an option you would like to pursue, please schedule an appointment with our office to discuss your eligibility.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as an F-1 border commuter student, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen.
  • Maintain a permanent residence in Canada.
  • Reside within 75 miles of the U.S.–Canada border.
  • Be admitted to a full-time academic program at the College/University.
  • Receive a valid Form I-20 issued by our International Student Office indicating commuter status.
  • Seek admission in F-1 status at a U.S. Port of Entry each time you enter the United States for study.

Remain in Lawful F-1 Commuter Status

To remain in lawful F-1 commuter status, you must:

  • Maintain enrollment.
  • Continue to reside within 75 miles of the U.S.–Canada border.
  • Keep immigration documents valid and up to date.
  • Report any changes in academic program, major, address, or personal information to the International Student Office.
  • Depart the United States after completing your academic activities each day, as you are not authorized to live in the U.S.

Additional Considerations

F-1 border commuter regulations are governed by U.S. federal immigration law and are subject to change. Students are responsible for maintaining their immigration status at all times.

We encourage all Canadian commuter students to remain in close contact with the International Student Office for guidance and support. Our team is here to help you navigate your academic journey while ensuring compliance with all immigration requirements.
