Motorcycle Safety Program

Meet Some of Our Instructors

Improving the safety of motorcyclists on our roads is our primary goal. The Detroit Metro Motorcycle Safety Consortium was formed in 1999 to offers hands-on, comprehensive motorcycle safety training in a safe and comfortable environment. Since 1999, the consortium has trained over 46,000 students. Our classes are taught by professional, certified instructors who not only have a passion for riding – but riding safety. State funds from a motorcycle safety grant administered by the Michigan Department of State support this program.

Vince ConsiglioVince Consiglio received his RiderCoach certification in 1979. Vince is a retired school teacher and is currently the Coordinator for the Detroit Metro Motorcycle Safety Consortium. With over 40 years of riding and over 900,000 miles on motorcycles, Vince’s passion is in sharing his knowledge and experience to help people learn and develop their motorcycle skills. Vince teaches at the Macomb and Schoolcraft sites.

Allen GigliottiAllen Gigliotti received his motorcycle certification in 1993. He currently works in facilities management at Henry Ford Community College. Allen has 25 years of riding experience, but he rode for some time without any formal training – he was astonished at how much he did not know! He loves coaching his students, especially when he sees a student all of a sudden "get it" – when they turn their head in a corner, use the clutch in a u-turn, progressively squeeze their front brake lever and more. Allen teaches at the Henry Ford Community College, Macomb, Schoolcraft, and Oakland sites.

Bob FeyersBob Feyers received his RiderCoach certification in April 2007. In October 2010, he was one of the first groups of coaches in Michigan to be certified to teach the new Advanced Rider Course. Aside from teaching motorcycle safety, Bob works for Magna International as a Development Engineer in the automotive industry. Bob loves being a RiderCoach and enjoys every class that he teaches because every class has something memorable. However, the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing a struggling student successfully complete the program as a strong rider. Bob teaches at every consortium training site except for St. Clair and Monroe.

Nathan MitchellNathan Mitchell received his RiderCoach certification in 2009. He is a master motorcycle mechanic and general fix-it-all kind of guy. Nathan has been riding for over 30 years and has seen too many friends and new riders get hurt. He would like to do whatever he can to ensure that motorcycle riders can learn the skills needed to ride safely. Every student he passes makes him feel enriched by their happiness and the new freedom they have achieved. Nathan teaches at the Wayne County Community College and Schoolcraft College sites.

Richard EllisRichard Ellis received his RiderCoach certification in 1989. He previously worked in the civil engineering/architectural field. Now, he currently operates a motorcycle parts and accessories business that specializes in safety gear such as helmets, gloves, and goggles. When he began riding, no street safety classes were available so as a teenager he was left to learn on his own. Richard appreciates that this program provides riders of all backgrounds an affordable way to learn, practice and hone their skills to handle possibly life changing situations on the road. He is proud to have taught literally thousands of riders to have the confidence to be better drivers all around. Richard teaches at the Wayne County Community College District and Schoolcraft College Radcliff sites.

RJ WilsonRJ Wilson received his RiderCoach certification in 1995. He is semi-retired and has been riding for more than 40 years. Because of RJ’s pure enjoyment of the sport, he wants to pass on his passion to others and to promote safe riding to new riders. His most memorable moment was teaching a deaf and mute student to ride so that he could fulfill his dream of riding solo to Tennessee to visit his relatives. RJ teaches at the Macomb and Schoolcraft sites.

Matt MaesMatt Maes received his RiderCoach certification in 2008. Matt rode bikes for 15 years before taking a motorcycle safety class. He could not believe that he had survived riding for so many years not knowing the things that he had just learned in his class - it was like a hundred light bulbs went off in his head. The safety courses he took not only taught him how to be a safer, more responsible rider and he hopes to share his knowledge and experiences with his students. Matt teaches at the Schoolcraft and Macomb sites.

Dean MooreDean Moore received his RiderCoach certification in 2002. Riding since he was 8, Dean learned proper street riding when he took the Performance Based Rider Course at Macomb Community College in 2001. Dean continues to learn new things every time he throws a leg over his bike and hope that his students realize that as long as you are riding, you continue to learn. Dean teaches at the Macomb site.

Brad ThatcherBrad Thatcher received his RiderCoach certification in 2006. Brad has been riding for over 40 years and wants people to enjoy their time on a motorcycle as well as realize they need to be safe and evaluate the risk for themselves. They also need to understand what sharing the highway is all about. Brad has 3 generations in his family who ride; his father on his Ultra, his daughter on her Buell and Brad on his own Ultra. Brad teaches at the Macomb and Radcliff sites.

Fred VanPamelFred VanPamel received his RiderCoach certification in 2001. Fred has been actively riding for over 35 years. Fred recalls a time counseling a BRC student to continue with the class and not to give up. He spent a little more time with the student giving moral support, and saw the student pass the riding exams on Sunday with no points assessed against them. Despite the RiderCoach job being part-time, Fred shares and passes on his passion to new riders that make the job enjoyable and fulfilling. Fred teaches at the Macomb site.
