RN/LPN Nursing Skills Competency Certification


Format: In-person skills lab
Max Enrollment: Up to 12 students per class
Location: Schoolcraft College Nursing Skills Lab – Health Sciences Building


Course Overview

This one-day hands-on certification course is designed for RNs and LPNs who must complete the Michigan Board of Nursing (LARA) Certification of Nursing Skills Competency requirement for license reinstatement. Participants will review and demonstrate essential nursing skills under the guidance of Schoolcraft College’s nursing faculty.

Please note that this is not a Nursing Refresher course.

Participants who successfully meet skill requirements will receive an official Certification of Completion, fulfilling the Michigan State Board of Nursing competency requirement.

Session Objectives

Through supervised practice and performance testing, participants will demonstrate competency in key clinical areas, including:

  1. Perform vital signs and head-to-toe physical assessment.
  2. Administer ordered medications using five rights, based on assessment findings and laboratory results.
  3. Calculate medication dosages and IV flow rates accurately.
  4. Document assessment, medication administration, and SBAR note accurately.
  5. Maintain isolation precautions based on patient diagnoses.
  6. Perform sterile procedure correctly.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate ergonomic movements and safety precautions when moving and transferring a patient.
  8. Communicate appropriately throughout all patient care.
  9. Maintain patient safety throughout all care.

Who Should Enroll

  • Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses seeking to reinstate their Michigan nursing license
  • Nurses referred by LARA for skills validation

  • Stethoscope
  • Penlight
  • Nursing uniform or casual business attire
