MSK (Musculoskeletal Ultrasound) Structured Education
Course Overview
Schoolcraft College’s MSK (Musculoskeletal Ultrasound) Structured Education program is designed for registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) who are preparing for the ARDMS post-primary certification exam in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
This 26-week program provides 65 hours of structured instruction in a blended format of online lectures and hands-on scanning labs. Students gain both the didactic knowledge and practical skills required by ARDMS, including ultrasound physics, instrumentation, anatomy, pathology, and guided procedures. Biweekly lecture sessions will be recorded for those students who are unable to attend. The course requires students attend Lab sessions biweekly for 3 hours. These courses will be scheduled during the evening hours, and hands-on state-of-the-art equipment will provide students with the opportunity to learn scanning techniques on campus.
What You’ll Learn
Participants will gain the knowledge and competencies to:
- Apply ultrasound physics, system instrumentation, and image optimization to MSK imaging.
- Identify and evaluate the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the musculoskeletal system, including upper and lower extremities, abdominal wall, chest wall, hip, pelvis, knee, and pediatric considerations.
- Demonstrate proper patient orientation, scanning protocols, and ergonomic techniques.
- Perform and critique hands-on MSK ultrasound scans, distinguishing between normal and abnormal structures.
- Apply infection control, safety, and ethical practices in ultrasound imaging.
- Recognize and analyze artifacts, Doppler patterns, and sonographic findings in injuries, disease processes, and post-surgical changes.
- Demonstrate proficiency in ultrasound-guided procedures of the musculoskeletal system.
- Prepare for the ARDMS MSK certification exam with review sessions and a mock exam.
