Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powertrains

Format: 100% Online | Total Hours: 6-hour online course
Platform: Blackboard

Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, using real-world examples such as the Toyota Mirai, Hyundai models, and commercial fleets. Participants will explore key components including the fuel cell stack, membrane layers, hydrogen tanks, and associated EV systems. The course covers startup and shutdown procedures, with a focus on hydrogen purge safety and potential hazards from residual gas. Learners will examine power and energy flow, thermal management, electrical isolation, and system operating temperatures. Attention is given to the energy management strategies, common failure modes like catalyst degradation and pinhole leaks, and the role of sensors and actuators in ensuring safe, efficient operation. Safety considerations, such as hydrogen leak detection and high-flammability hazards, are addressed throughout.
