Course Overview
This immersive, hands-on course gives participants direct experience working with the electrical systems of an electric vehicle. Using the SWITCH Lab platform, students will assemble, wire, program, and troubleshoot EV systems while practicing high-voltage safety protocols. This lab-based training is ideal for those entering or transitioning into electric vehicle maintenance and diagnostics.
What You’ll Learn
- Identify and explain key EV components and their functions
- Practice OSHA/ASE-compliant high-voltage safety procedures
- Interpret wiring diagrams and program EV control systems
- Troubleshoot issues using real-time data from the Battery Management System (BMS)
- Assemble and configure the battery system and motor controller
- Understand different types of EV charging systems

Gerald Lickey
EV SWITCH Lab Instructor
After many years in the automotive industry, Gerald brings real-world experience and technical expertise to our EV SWITCH Lab. He is also the lead automotive instructor at Plymouth Canton High School, where he guides students through hands-on automotive training. He also serves as the Career and Technical Education (CTE) department lead, helping to shape the school’s broader CTE efforts.
His passion for advancing automotive education led him to introduce SWITCH vehicles into the classroom, giving students direct experience with electric vehicle technology. Under his leadership, the program has become the Midwest hub for SWITCH instructor training, supporting educators across the region in preparing the next generation of skilled technicians.
