Community College Success Stories: Tommy DeJesus
Meet Tommy DeJesus, University bound Scholar and Community College success story. DeJesus is on the pathway to success. This Political Science Major has his eyes set on a bright future.
When asked How do you feel your Community College experience has prepared you for Transfer Success, DeJesus shared.
“Like a lot of young people, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life post-HS graduation. I toyed with the idea of going to a university but when it came time to finalize my choice, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Going to Schoolcraft was a great transition for me post-HS. I learned a lot about how to set my own schedule and I became passionate about education as a result.”
DeJesus committed himself to making a difference while at Schoolcraft and used the leadership and personal development skills he gained to help land acceptance into one of the top HBCU’s in the country, Howard University.
DeJesus on his acceptance to Howard University,” For me, it was a dream I’ve had since I was in high school. Howard’s home to some of the most brilliant minds of our time from Toni Morrison to Chadwick Boseman. I hope to continue their legacy by working in equity-centered spaces to provided resources for downtrodden communities.”
DeJesus furthermore shared words that have inspired him to press onwards towards obtaining a master’s in social work.
“Without struggle, there is no progress” – Frederick Douglass. I like this quote because it reminds me that although I experienced hardship, I can turn the negative experiences of my life into a positive as an inspiration to young people who might have gone thru the same hardship.”
