DEI STARS Fellows Visit the State Capitol
Life is all about the choices we make! We’re affected by our own choices and the choices of others, that’s why it’s important to understand who we entrust to be our voices when laws, legislation, practices, and policies are being made that affect our communities and society. The Office of Equity & Engagement is dedicated to helping those who are negatively impacted by inequality due to decades old systemic discriminatory behaviors being perpetrated by individuals who are in positions of influence, power, and privilege.
Over this past year we hit the ground running on some of the most controversial issues in higher learning institutions, our communities, and the world at large. We understand that to drive results-based solutions that we must address uncomfortable issues, and being proactive helps us to achieve meaningful results and improve outcomes for every member of our Schoolcraft College community! Our brightest and best Scholars went to our State Capitol to meet with Representative Stephanie A. Young and gain first-hand knowledge of how to increase their advocacy, the importance of civic engagement and more. Our students shared their Community College experiences and their concerns regarding affirmative action, LGBTQ rights, diversity and inclusion and current events taking place across the state of Michigan.
