This module introduces foundational networking concepts such as CAN, LIN, Ethernet, and the OSI model, and it connects these systems to real-world applications like diagnostics, connected vehicles, and cybersecurity. Learners will gain an understanding of how data is transmitted within vehicles, how to diagnose network issues, and how emerging technologies like V2X communication are transforming mobility.

What You’ll Learn

Identify and compare common vehicle communication protocols including CAN, LIN, PWM, and Ethernet.

Describe the structure and function of vehicle diagnostic protocols such as OBD-II and UDS, including how data is requested and interpreted.

Apply the OSI model to automotive networks and match key vehicle communication layers with real-world vehicle systems.

Diagnose CAN bus errors.

Describe tools used to interface with vehicle networks, such as loggers and CAN adapters.

Explain how modern vehicles connect to external systems via V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technologies.

Course Modules Include

Vehicle Communication Networks

Working with Vehicle Networks

Vehicle Networks on the OSI Model

Comparison of Vehicle Protocols

UDS and OBD on CAN

Connected Vehicles

For questions or enrollment support, contact:
workforcetraining@schoolcraft.edu
Schoolcraft College Workforce and Economic Development
18600 Haggerty Rd, Livonia, MI | schoolcraft.edu/workforce

Vehicle Connectivity Format: 100% Online | Total Hours: 6-hour online courseMaterials: Note-taking guide included Course Overview Connectivity explores how modern vehicles communicate internally and externally through a range of communication protocols, networks, and diagnostic tools.
