<\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\nSchoolcraft Scholars Graduate, Owen Phillips, attends U-M\u2019s Great Lakes Arts, Cultures, and Environments (GLACE)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
October 26, 2023<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Recent Honors Scholars graduate Owen Phillips got the chance to study in the woods this past summer. Phillips, who now attends the University of Michigan, spent all of July at the U-M Biological Station on Douglas Lake in Pellston in the northern Lower Peninsula. There, he participated in U-M\u2019s Great Lakes Arts, Cultures, and Environments (GLACE) program, which consisted of taking a pair of classes along with students from other community colleges and the University of Michigan. Subjects included classes in English, Anthropology and Native American history, with activities such as a boat trip to Mackinac Island, visiting local ecosystems, reading and writing poetry, and making prints with a printing press. Phillips is currently attending U-M for a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Alpine European History with hopes to one day pursue a Doctorate degree in History.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n October 30, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Honors Scholar Camila Villalobos has accomplished quite a lot during her first year as the Schoolcraft College Amnesty International Club President. Given the needs for remote learning and social distancing on campus, Camila has led Amnesty International Club through various virtual events including a COVID-19 presentation with Professor Kristin Fruth and a Black Lives Matter movie night. On October 2, 2020, Camila was featured in City of Asylum Pittsburgh and Amnesty International Ithaca\u2019s “Crossing the Line” event, a national presentation about free expression, political cartoons, and the importance of humor in today\u2019s political climate. Following the event, SCAI Club participated in a letter writing party, where participants sent over 100 virtual letters in support of writers, journalists, and artists who are being silenced around the world. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n September 1, 2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Schoolcraft Scholar Alumnus, Daniel Arini attended the Udall Scholar Orientation over the summer. Daniel was selected as one of only 55 nation-wide recipients of the prestigious 2019 Udall Undergraduate Scholarship. Daniel said, \u201cI had an absolute blast connecting with my fellow scholars from across the country! Thank you for all your help in making it happen for me!” Currently, Daniel is attending University of Michigan-Dearborn, where he is part of the ECO club as well as the Philosophy Club.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n May 7, 2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n For his SOC 290 capstone project, Honors Scholar Peter Bushaw presented on the success of the second Atypical Variety Show. The Atypical Variety Show (4\/26) was hosted and organized by Peter Bushaw, Alessandra McBroom, and Joseph Jankowski. This was not your typical variety show, as all of the acts included individuals of the special needs population of all ages. The event raised over $10,000 and all proceeds went to the nonprofit organization, The Living and Learning Enrichment Center.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n December 14, 2018<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Honors Scholar, Marie Chantal Nyirahategekimana received First Place in Writing and Third Place in Art in the Fall 2018 International Agenda Writing and Art Contest. The contest is sponsored by Schoolcraft\u2019s International Agenda magazine and generously funded by the Office of Instruction. Her painting is inspired by her mother and the hardships her family faced during the Rwandan genocide. Marie stated, \u201cMy mother told me that while in the refugee camp, she often had to walk miles to get just a little bit of water. The painting is a representation of my mother, her strength, and her ability to survive.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n November 18, 2018<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Honors Scholar alumna, Allyson Wonfor, attended the 2018 Newman Civic Fellows National Conference in Boston from November 17-18. Wonfor was awarded the 2017-2018 Newman Civic Fellowship for her outstanding service. She co-founded Hearts and Hugs, a non-profit organization through which she crochets and donates hats for prenatal babies. Wonfor graduated from the Honors Program in 2018, and she’s currently studying at The University of Toledo College of Nursing.
