The social security number is used for verification purposes only, and is not used as a student ID number. Federal legislation relating to the Hope Tax Credit requires that all postsecondary institutions report student social security numbers to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This IRS requirement makes it necessary for community colleges to collect the social security number of every student.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/details><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-accordion gb-block-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"gb-accordion-title\">How do I know my SSN information will not be compromised?<\/summary><div class=\"gb-accordion-text\">\n<p>To protect your identity, Schoolcraft College will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Secure your social security number from unauthorized access.<\/li><li>Prohibit the release of your social security number to unauthorized parties.<\/li><li>Assign you a unique student identification number which is used for all educational purposes at Schoolcraft College.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-accordion gb-block-accordion\"><details><summary class=\"gb-accordion-title\">What if I refuse and\/or am unable to provide my SSN?<\/summary><div class=\"gb-accordion-text\">\n<p>If a student does not provide his\/her social security number, Schoolcraft College is not able to verify enrollment for loans or employment purposes, and the student will be unable to apply for financial aid. Federal law requires you to provide your social security number on your federal forms to be considered for financial aid.
