The University Bound Program is “Growing by Leaps and Bounds!!”

During the past year the University Bound Program, a joint partnership between Schoolcraft College and Wayne State University, has changed and grown dramatically. The program serves Schoolcraft students who intend to transfer to Wayne State or any other university. The program serves a wide range of students from freshmen through those who are ready to graduate. Over 450 students have utilized program services. Free services have grown and include the following:

  • Professional mentoring
  • Individualized peer tutoring
  • Individualized professional study skills assistance
  • Academic seminars
  • University Campus tours
  • Assistance with university applications, financial aid forms, and other related paperwork
  • Assistance with contacting university personnel
  • Summer program for transferring to Wayne State University

During the Wayne State summer program 20 students from Schoolcraft spent two days attending workshops, meeting with faculty, staff, and advisors and enjoying the experience of being in a large, urban university setting. One participant stated, “I initially felt uncomfortable thinking about being in the city, but by the second day I was surprised that I felt comfortable and ready to attend a large university. After meeting friendly people, I felt I could now do it!”

Academic workshops have been well-attended with many instructors bringing classes or providing extra credit for attendance. The following highlight some of the workshops that have been offered.

  • “How to Achieve Academic Success - A Student Perspective”
  • “Preparing for the 21st Century Work World - Requisite Skills and Career Trends”
  • “Test Anxiety - What is it? How do you cope with it?”

The program is successful and growing because students see that it provides the support they need to succeed at the community college and to help them make a smooth transition to a university setting. Intensive, individualized student contact allows relationships to be established. Research has demonstrated that students are more likely to stay in college and complete their studies if they have connected with someone on campus. The University Bound Program provides the environment necessary to make these critical connections.
