What is the Ombudsman service?
The ombudsman at Schoolcraft College directs students to the appropriate department/personnel to assist in resolving problems, or conflicts regarding College policies, procedures, and decisions, providing a neutral and confidential place for students to express their concerns.
The ombudsman may collaborate with others at the College in order to resolve academic and non-academic matters.
Contact the Ombudsman if you…
- Have a problem or conflict involving your experience at the College and don't know where to go to solve it.
- Need information about policies and procedures which affect you at Schoolcraft College.
- Have an illness, or other family emergency, and need the ombudsman to notify your instructors of an extended absence.
The Ombudsman can…
- Assist students in evaluating and assessing a variety of options to address their concerns.
- Answer questions, and find others who may assist in providing the correct answer.
- Make referrals as necessary and assist in creating a helping network for students.
- Contact instructors in the case of an illness or other emergency, which prohibits a student from attending class for an extended period of time.
The Ombudsman cannot…
- Give legal advice.
- Make administrative or academic decisions for any other part of the College.
- Give information regarding assignments missed while away from class due to an illness or other emergency.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is a main concern of the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman will not reveal a student’s name or the nature of the issue without the student’s consent. With the student's permission, individuals whose help is necessary to resolve a specific problem may be contacted.
