Schoolcraft College's English as a Second Language (ESL) program offerings assist those for whom English is not their primary language to help them in their college studies or to improve their activities for daily life.
For those students who are seeking college credit in ESL we offer classes that prepare students for study in American college settings and use of the English language for improved communication with native speakers in business and personal settings. Credit courses focus on English and vocabulary development; academic writing; speaking and listening skills; reading and grammar for college level courses; and test preparation and note-taking skills.
In addition to courses for credit students, Schoolcraft College’s Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) offers a number of non-credit ESL courses for members of the community who are not college students but would like to improve their English language skills and communicate more effectively in their daily lives.
The credit and non-credit English as a Second Language programs consist of five levels, each focused on the following three content areas:
- Grammar and Writing
- Reading and Vocabulary
- Speaking and Listening
Students are initially placed into the appropriate level, based on their ESL Accuplacer Test scores.
