Kids on Campus Frequently Asked Questions
-
How did the Kids On Campus (KOC) program get started?
30 years ago, the program began as a selection of science and math classes specifically for TAG (talented and gifted) students. The program then expanded to offer a wide variety enrichment classes for all students in grades 1st - 9th. KOC also began to offer Academic Enrichment classes for 6th - 12th graders through the Learning Assistance Center. This year the KOC program is morphing once again into our latest and greatest 30th anniversary summer camps version for children in grades one through nine. Each camp consists of an exciting week-long program centered on one particular subject. We also offer Before and After Care, camps for TAG students, and Academic Skills Workshops. -
What is a TAG class?
TAG stands for Talented and Gifted. These camps are typically more advanced and move at a faster pace. -
Who can I ask about Academic Skills Workshops, or Learning Assistance Center (LAC) workshops?
All class content questions for Academic Skills Workshop should be directed to Kathy Fortner at (734) 462-4400 ext. 5407. Kathy works part-time and she may not be able to return your call immediately. She will return your call as soon as possible. -
Will students have breaks during the day?
Yes. These breaks will be established by the instructor of the class. -
Does my child need to bring lunch?
Yes. Lunch will not be provided so every child needs to bring a bag lunch. -
Can I register my child for a class that is listed above/below their grade level?
We do not recommend it. Class activities are presented according to grades listed in the schedule. As a result, a student can feel frustrated and not happy with their camp experience. Ultimately, the decision is up to the parent. -
My child took this program last year; can they take the program again this year?
As long as your child is interested in taking the course again, they are more than welcome to repeat a class or camp. Many times the class content changes from year to year to accommodate repeat students. -
What is the class size of a KOC camp?
In order to provide a great learning experience, we have limited our class sizes.- Camps 3rd - 9th grade: 15
- 1st & 2nd grade: 12
- Academic Skills Workshop: 15
Can I register my child for a class that is full?
Due to the instructor to student ratio as well as the materials needed for the course, we are unable to overload any of our classes. Can I put my child’s name on a wait list for a class that is full?
Due to the large number of classes and students that we handle in any given semester, we are unable to keep a waitlist for any of our classes.-
Do you offer financial aid or scholarships for Kids on Campus?
We do have a Schoolcraft Foundation Scholarship set up from the generous donations from the Rockall family; however, we are limited in the number of scholarships we can award. The KOC scholarship covers tuition for one camp. -
How can I apply for the KOC scholarship?
To apply for the KOC scholarship, contact the Continuing Education office and ask that a scholarship packet be sent to you. Please fill out the appropriate forms and return it to our office. If you child has been selected as a recipient, you will be contacted by the Coordinator of the program by June 1, 2009. -
How will I be notified if my child has been awarded a KOC scholarship?
You will receive a letter via U.S. mail. You will also be notified by mail if your child does not receive a scholarship. -
My child will not be attending today; do I need to contact someone?
If this class is an Academic Skills Workshop, you will need to contact Kathy Fortner of the Learning Assistance Center; she can be reached at (734) 462-4400 ext. 5407. Otherwise, we do not need to inform the instructor. -
I am not able to pick up my child today; may I send a family member or friend to do so?
Yes. Please write a note and ask that your family member or friend picking up your child bring it with them. Expect to have the letter kept by the KOC staff. -
I cannot pick up my child when their class ends; do I have to register for Before & After Care, or can they just ‘hang-out’ on campus?
For the safety of your child, you MUST register your child in Before & After Care. If they are found wandering the campus, Campus Security Police will pick them up and be in contact with you. -
My child has severe allergies and needs to carry and EpiPEN at all times. Will the instructor administer the medicine if he has an attack?
No, they can not. As stated in Safety and Program Guidelines, it is Schoolcraft policy that our staff not dispense medicine.
