Kids on Campus Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How did the Kids On Campus (KOC) program get started?
The program began as a selection of science and math classes specifically for TAG (talented and gifted) students. The program then expanded to offer a wide variety enrichment classes for all students in grades 1st - 9th and Academic Skills Workshops for 6th - 12th graders.

  2. Who can I ask about Academic Skills classes?
All content questions for the Academic Skills Workshops should be directed to Kids on Campus staff at 734-462-4448 or KOC@schoolcraft.edu.

  3. Will students have breaks during the day?
Yes. These breaks will be established by the instructor of the class.

  4. Does my child need to bring lunch?
Yes. Lunch will not be provided so every child needs to bring a bag lunch. Please try to send peanut-free lunch and snacks to avoid issues with campers who may have peanut allergies.

  5. Can I register my child for a class that is listed above/below their grade level?
We do not recommend it. Class activities are presented according to grades listed in the schedule. As a result, a student can feel frustrated and not happy with their camp experience. Ultimately, the decision is up to the parent.

  6. My child took this program last year; can they take the program again this year?
As long as your child is interested in taking the course again, they are more than welcome to repeat a class or camp. Many times the class content changes from year to year to accommodate repeat students.

  7. What is the class size of a KOC camp?
In order to provide a great learning experience, we have limited our class size to 15 students.

  8. Can I register my child for a class that is full?
Due to the instructor to student ratio as well as the materials needed for the course, we are unable to overload the majority of our camps.

  9. Can I put my child’s name on a wait list for a class that is full?
Due to the large number of classes and students that we handle in any given semester, we are unable to keep a waitlist for any of our classes.

  10. Do you offer financial aid or scholarships for Kids on Campus?
Yes. The Schoolcraft College Foundation has set up a scholarship through a generous donation provided by the Rockall family. There are limited scholarships available. A single KOC scholarship covers tuition for one camp during the summer KOC program.

  11. How can I apply for the KOC scholarship?
To apply for the summer KOC scholarship, contact the Continuing Education office and ask that a scholarship packet be sent to you. Please fill out the appropriate forms and return it to our office. If you child has been selected as a recipient, you will be contacted by the program coordinator.

  12. How will I be notified if my child has been awarded a KOC scholarship?
You will receive a letter via U.S. mail. You will also be notified by mail if your child does not receive a scholarship.

  13. My child will not be attending today; do I need to contact someone?
If your child is registered for an Academic Skills Workshop, you will need to call us at 734-462-4448 . Otherwise, we do not need to inform the instructor.

  14. I am not able to pick up my child today; may I send a family member or friend to do so?
Yes. Please write a note and ask that your family member or friend picking up your child bring it with them. Expect to have the letter kept by the KOC staff.

  15. My child needs to be picked up early from camp. What should I do?
Inform the instructor and Kids on Campus aide that your child needs to be picked up. Pick up the child directly from the classroom.

  16. I cannot pick up my child when their class ends; do I have to register for Before & After Care, or can they just ‘hang-out’ on campus?
For the safety of your child, you MUST register your child in Before & After Care. If they are found wandering the campus, Campus Security Police will pick them up and be in contact with you.

  17. My child has severe allergies and needs to carry an EpiPEN at all times. Will the instructor administer the medicine if he has an attack?
No, they cannot. As stated in Safety and Program Guidelines, it is Schoolcraft policy that our staff cannot dispense medicine. In the case of an emergency our instructors will contact Campus Security Police. Campus Security Police may administer an EpiPEN or inhaler if needed.

  18. My child needs to take medicine during the day. Can they bring medication to camp?
A student can bring medication to camp as long as they are able to self administer the medication. The medicine must be brought to campus in the medication bottle.

  19. What do you do to prevent bullying during the Kids on Campus Program?
The Schoolcraft College Continuing Education and Professional Development department prohibits acts of harassment or bullying. Harassment or bullying is conduct that disrupts a student’s ability to learn and the college’s ability to educate Kids on Campus students in a safe environment. CEPD expects students to conduct themselves in a manner in keeping with their levels of development, maturity and demonstrated capabilities with proper regard for the rights and welfare of other students, school staff, volunteers and contractors. Consequences and appropriate remedial actions for a student or staff member who commits one or more acts of harassment or bullying may range from positive behavioral interventions up to and including removal from the Kids on Campus program. All parents, instructors, program aides and members of the Schoolcraft community are encouraged to report any act that may be considered harassment or bullying.

  20. My child is feeling ill can I still send them to camp?
Children who are ill must remain at home. If a child becomes ill while at camp, the parents or emergency contact person will be notified and must pick up the child within one hour. While the child is waiting to be picked up, we will remove them from the classroom and make them as comfortable as possible.

A child who exhibits the following conditions will not be allowed in the Center:

    • a temperature of 100 degress or higher
    • conjunctivitis (pink eye)
    • impetigo or other unidentified rashes
    • diarrhea
    • vomiting
    • severe cold sneezing or excessive nose drainage
    • head lice
    • contagious diseases such as measles, mumps, or chicken pox
    • If we do not feel we can provide the type of care your "out of sorts" child requires, you will be notified to pick up your sick child.

Please notify us if your child has been exposed to a contagious disease. By helping us to observe good health standards, you will be protecting your child and the others in the camps.

    Re-admission after illness
A physician’s certification of health for reentry to camp may be required prior to readmitting a child after an illness or injury. The KOC staff will notify you if documentation must be provided. Your child must remain at home the following school day and be free of the following conditions for a minimum of 24 hours before returning to school: fever, diarrhea, vomiting.

Re-admittance to camp will also be at the discretion of the KOC staff. If your child does not seem well, we will ask that your child remain at home until they are able to fully participate in the program.
