Schoolcraft College offers free math workshops in August

The Learning Assistance Center at Schoolcraft College is offering four math preparation/refresher workshops in August. The workshops are free and open to anyone planning on taking a college-level math course at Schoolcraft College or any college or university.
Jump Start 1000 (JS 1000), which will be held Friday, August 17 and Thursday, August 23 from 1 - 3 p.m., is created for those entering Math 045* (Schoolcraft course) or similar proficiency level college course. Participants will benefit from a math study skills inventory and a review of the four fundamental operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) of whole numbers. JS 1000 builds the foundation for all futher math courses.
Jump Start 2000 (JS 2000), which will be held Friday, August 17 and Wednesday, August 22 from 1 – 3 p.m., is created for those entering Mathematics (MATH)  047, 101 or 111,* or Accounting (ACCT) 103, 201 or 202* (Schoolcraft courses) or similar proficiency level college course. Particiants will benefit from a math study skills inventory and a review of fractions, decimal, percents, and order of operations.
Jump Start 3000 (JS 3000), which will be held Friday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 21 from 1 – 3:30 p.m., is created for those entering Math 053 or 105*, or ACCT 103, 201, 202*  (Schoolcraft courses) or similar proficiency level college course. Participants will benefit from a math study skills inventory and a review of basic integer operations, order of operations, expressions, and equation solving.
Jump Start 4000 (JS 4000), which will be held Friday, August 17 and Monday, August 20 from 1 – 3 p.m., is created for students entering MATH 105 and 113*, CHEM 51*, Economics (ECON) 201 & 202*, Phyics (PHYS) 051 or 104*, Elec 145*, Biomedical Engineering Technology (BMET) 125, or Nursing (NURS) 102, 104 or 110* (Schoolcraft courses) or similar proficiency level college course. Participants will benift from a math study skills review of expressions, linear equation solving, graphing lines, factoring polynomials and metric conversions.
“We want to give math students all of the tools they need to be successful in their college courses,” said Terri Lamb, mathematics learning specialist at Schoolcraft College. “For some students these workshops can serve as a timely refresher for the skills and knowledge they need just before the start of the fall semester. For other students, the Jump Start sessions will provide an extra boost of confidence walking into their next math class.”
The Jump Start sessions are free and open to anyone, however registration is necessary. The workshops will be held on the college’s main campus in Livonia, Haggerty Road between Six and Seven Mile Roads. Jump Start is made possible through a grant from the Schoolcraft College Foundation.
