Pageturners explores autism in September with book discussions and movie screenings

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon is the focus of Pageturners book club's September selection. In addition to three book discussion opportunities, Pageturners will host two screenings of the 2010 HBO movie Temple Grandin. The book and the movie both explore issues related to autism, but each from a different perspective.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is the story of a 15-year-old boy named Christopher who investigates the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog. Christopher has Asperger's syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, which affects his daily life and the way he documents his investigation. He knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched, and he detests the color yellow. Christopher’s detective work takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.
Temple Grandin is an engaging portrait of an autistic young woman, chronicling Temple's early diagnosis; her turbulent growth and development during her school years; the enduring support she received from her mother, aunt, and her science teacher; and her emergence as a woman with an innate sensitivity and understanding of animal behavior. Undaunted by education, social and professional roadblocks, Grandin turned her unique talent into a behavioral tool that revolutionized the cattle industry and laid the groundwork for her successful career as an author, lecturer and pioneering advocate for autism and autism spectrum disorder education.
