Evaluating Web Sites:
Additional Software or
Hardware Not Required

Quality web sites do not need to be state of the art with all of the current bells and whistles. In fact, the designers of quality web sites generally assume that their audience will not have the latest equipment. Could someone whose computer is three or four years old still be able to access my site is an important question for them to ask?

Sometimes, due to the nature of a web site, certain types of software or hardware might be legitimately required. For example, the designer of a web site that sells music should not be criticized by individuals who do not have speakers for their computer.

Web designers who do not consider the hardware and software that their users will likely have available to them might be able to design a sophisticated web site, but sophistication does not necessarily mean quality.
