Resources for
Preventing Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as the taking of words, thoughts, ideas, or writings of another and presenting them as one’s own. This includes using someone else’s work as an outline for your own or using a term coined by another without giving appropriate credit to the originator.

Students are often encouraged to work together in determining how to accomplish the various tasks you are presented with throughout the semester, but when it comes time to prepare your assignments, you must work alone (except as otherwise noted).

In writing, three consecutive words represent an upward limit; reproducing more than three words from any source within your own work requires the use of quotation marks with bibliographic citations. Sometimes, using even a single, unique word requires documentation.

In research, using someone else’s method of solving a problem, idea for an experiment, or interpretation of data, without attribution, are also examples of plagiarism.

Our belief is that the best time to combat plagiarism is while designing the assignment; not after the plagiarism has already occured.
