TEACH Act Requirement
Putting the copyrighted materials on-line does not replace textbooks, coursepacks, or other materials usually purchased by students.
Explanation
Currently, American history professors at Schoolcraft College use the brief edition of A People and a Nation (Norton, 2003)so that students can use the same text book in more than one class. In Early American History (HIST 151), only the first twelve chapters of the book are read. Dgitizing those chapters so that students don't have to buy the entire book would be illegal.
Although digitizing chapters of a text book would be clearly illegal, it is not so clear if it is acceptable to digitize assigned reading that you might make available to your students at the library. Unfortunately, even though students do not have to purchase the assigned readings, the TEACH Act does not permit you to make a digitized version available to your students unless you have permission of the copyright holder.
