Copyright in the Classroom

The last major revision of U.S. Copyright Law took place in 1976; a law whose fair use provision allows faculy members to use copyrighted materials in the classroom if certain conditions are met. In 2002, Congress passed the Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act. This act extends defines fair use for materials used in the on-line classroom.

So as not to violate the law, Schoolcraft College faculty members need to understand fair use as defined by

Schoolcraft College Policy 3112.1 includes a Fair Use Checklist that can be used by any college employee to determine if they can legally reproduce copyrighted materials without getting permission of the copyright holder.

A TEACH Act Rubric has been developed for members of the faculty who want to reproduce copyrighted materials in an on-line format.
