Student Employment at Schoolcraft College
As a Schoolcraft College student, you may be interested in working on campus to earn money, meet people, and develop new job skills. The Career and Transfer Center will help you coordinate your on-campus student employment. All student job vacancies are posted on the jobs database in the Career and Transfer Center, McDowell Center, room MC205. Phone: (734) 422-4421.
The Center is open Monday through Friday. Job referrals are on a walk in basis.
Hours for job referrals are: Monday & Thursday, 8am - 7pm; Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday, 8am - 4pm.
Work Hours and Earnings
The average wage for on campus employment is $6.50 per hour. Some departments may pay at a per event rate; i.e., scoring a basketball game $20.00 per game.
Students are eligible to work a maximum of 25 hours per week on campus. You can be employed in more than one campus job as long as you do not exceed your eligible work hours per week.
International students are eligible to work a maximum of 20 hours per week on campus. Audits are not allowed. Students must be enrolled for credit and receive a grade in their courses.
Advantages of Student Employment
Student employment provides the opportunity for students to learn essential work skills such as teamwork, effective communication, organization and critical thinking while attending classes in a field of study. Student employment is a convenient option for students who wish to work while maintaining a commitment for academic success.
Eligibility for On-Campus Employment
You must be registered and attending class a minimum of six (6) credit hours during the fall and winter semesters, a minimum of three (3) credit hours during the spring session, and (3) credit hours during summer session. All students must have and maintain 2.0 cumulative GPA.
You are not eligible for on-campus student employment if any of the following apply:
- You are not eligible to work in the United States.
- You do not have a United States Social Security number assigned to you by the Social Security Administration.
- You do not meet the enrollment and GPA requirements.
Types of jobs available
Many types of skilled and unskilled jobs are available on-campus. Students may work as clerical assistants, receptionists, tutors, computer lab assistants, newspaper staff, food service workers, and facilities and ground workers, library and bookstore assistants.
Applying for On-Campus Student Employment
Review the job listings carefully, including the job description, required qualifications, and the available days and times. Write down the job numbers of the positions that interest you. After selecting the jobs from the database, a student employment specialist will check your qualifications and eligibility before referring you to the department that is hiring.
Interviewing With the Hiring Department
Be prepared to discuss any previous work or volunteer experiences you have had. Dress appropriately and be on time for the interview. Remember to bring your class schedule to the interview. Thank the interviewer for their time and consideration.
After Your Interview
If you get the job, return to the Career and Transfer Center to complete necessary hiring authorization paperwork. You will fill out W-4 tax forms and show two documents to verify your eligibility to work in the United States. You will be given a Student Employment Handbook with the guidelines and policies for Schoolcraft College Student Employees. Be sure to read it. If you do not get the job, return to the Career and Transfer Center to apply for another position.
