Student Employee Guidelines
Responsibilities as a Student Employee
To be a successful student employee arrive for work on time and maintain a good attendance record. Carry out assigned tasks and help to achieve the long-term goals of the department. Become knowledgeable of procedures, rules and guidelines and ask for clarification when directions are unclear. Always contact your supervisor as early as possible in the event of illness or other reasons for absence or tardiness. Dress according to the recommendations of your supervisor. Individual departments may specify necessary dress guidelines.
Provide sufficient notice to your supervisor (preferably two weeks) if you decide to leave your job. Successful student employees are an integral part of the staff and can look forward to positive job references from their employers in the future.
Breaks
You are allowed one 15-minute non-paid rest break during each four-hour period worked. Your supervisor may establish a set time for these breaks.
Paychecks
You will be issued a biweekly paycheck based on an hourly rate determined by the department when you are hired. Federal and State taxes will be deducted from your check. FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax will not be withheld while you are attending classes. You can choose to have your paycheck deposited directly into your bank account (checking or savings).
Attendance, Illness and Time Off
Discuss your class schedule with your supervisor before the beginning of each semester so you can set your work schedule. Your supervisor will establish standards for attendance and occasional variations in your work schedule.
You do not earn pay when you are ill or on vacation, holidays, jury duty, or snow days. You are paid only for hours you actually work.
Job-Related Problems
You and your supervisor can usually resolve employment-related misunderstandings or misinterpretations of student employment policies, procedures, or work practices. When such problems cannot be resolved, a formal complaint procedure is available. It is the policy of Schoolcraft College that no person shall, on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination during any program or activity or in employment.
