Course Description
This course is part of a series of courses designed to introduce non-native speakers of English to the skills they will need to succeed in an academic environment where English is spoken. The content of this course focuses on major grammatical concepts, including parts of speech, sentence functions and sentence patterns.
Prerequisites
(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)
- Appropriate placement test score.
Course Competencies
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Identify and accurately use parts of speech, especially nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions.
- Identify and use basic sentence parts such as subjects, predicates, modifying phrases, independent and dependent clauses.
- Write complete sentences.
- Compose basic paragraphs.
- Edit paragraphs for accurate punctuation and clear sentence structure.
