CIS 115 Introduction to Computer Based Systems (3-0) 3 Cr. Hrs.
Course Description

This is a three-credit-hour survey course of micro, mini, and mainframe computer systems. Class lectures include the following topics: Internet, Web and e-mail basics; hardware; software; file management, virus protection, backup; Internet and LAN technology; Web pages, Web sites and E-commerce; digital media; the computer industry history, products and careers; information system analysis and design; databases; computer programming; large-scale computing. Approximately one-third of the class time is spent as a hands-on course using personal computers to create Web pages using HTML/XHTML and the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Prerequisites

(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

  • Computer and Keyboarding experience highly recommended.
Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Create Web pages using HTML/XHTML.
  • Create a Web site from an original design.
  • Use a PC to access the Internet, browse and search the World Wide Web, and use e-mail.
  • Use Blackboard course management system, WebAdvisor and word processing software.
  • Examine how computers are used today in a variety of careers and in social networking.
  • Evaluate computer hardware, operating systems, applications, RAM, browsers, ISPs and utilities.
  • Determine how to configure and protect home computers and networks.
  • Assess the current role and future of mobile computing devices.
  • Analyze software programming languages and debugging techniques.
  • Critique developing conditions in implantable chips, cyber-terrorism and tech addiction.
