Course Description
This course emphasizes the integration of design and software skills to create more effective layouts for print media. Students will explore photography and digital imaging, illustration, graphic design and page layout. Students learn to use type effectively, create and integrate images and type, set up projects for printing, and apply design principles to create effective and readable documents. Instruction in advanced software techniques and in the use of a variety of peripherals is featured. Emphasis will be on the application of software and design skills to a variety of realistic graphic design projects.

Course Competencies
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Design for client and reader needs, utilizing professional studio methods, processes and resources to solve design problems.
- Utilize appropriate software application tools and hardware peripherals including scanners, printers, digital cameras and file servers.
- Demonstrate understanding by appropriately applying advanced design skills: typography and type specifications; characteristics of effective nonverbal communication; stylistic considerations for different applications; and design characteristics of various applications.
- Design for the technical processes of the publishing industry, within the limitations inherent in the production process, by creating camera ready materials, preparing projects for a service bureau, editing and proofreading; use Pantone and other color matching systems; create and utilize appropriate file types and package files appropriately.
- Use Portable Document Format in the production workflow to create files properly for print production and screen viewing
