Course Description

This course covers techniques for creating and designing graphical layouts for future use on the Web. The student will learn the principles of design and functionality as it pertains to Web site design and layout and how to create the different image types that current Web browsers support. The student will also be instructed on the methods of deconstructing a design to generate optimized image assets that can be used later in the implementation of a Web sites construction. In addition, skills in design image optimization techniques, color theory and an understanding of multiple platform, operating systems and browser limitations are covered.

(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Explain Internet basics such as browsers, XHTML, web graphic formats, optimization and compression.
  • Utilize Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks skills for Web graphic development.
  • Explain the Web Environment, screen design, browser differences, and cross platform differences.
  • Distinguish when it is appropriate to use different image types.
  • Deconstruct a design to identify optimal image use for a web site.
  • Differentiate hexadecimal colors and color-related XHTML tags.
  • Create browser safe artwork.
  • Explain the limitations of graphics on the Web.
  • Explain usability and functionality at a designer's level.
  • Create a graphical representation of a web page layout.
