Conflict Resolution Specialist Certificate
The Schoolcraft College Continuing Education and Professional Development Department (CEPD) in conjunction with Alternative Dispute Resolution Consortium (ADRC, LLC), approved trainers Joe Jenio & Laura Bassier Stopczynski, are proud to be offering a certificate program to become a Conflict Resolution Specialist. Mediation is quickly becoming a popular alternative to other legal methods. The demand for those skilled in this area is expected to increase due to backlogs in the legal system.
Our Conflict Resolution Specialist Certificate program is designed to accommodate all levels of education and experience. Individuals in the legal field (judges, lawyers and paralegals), people in the business world, students, from lifelong learners to entry level, will find the classroom exercises and instruction are flexible and provide tools for success. Alternative dispute resolution theory is taught through classroom exercises geared to the adult learner and provides tools easily implemented for success.

Conflict Resolution Specialist Certificate Classes
Basic Mediation
Required for Conflict Resolution Specialist certificate.
Learn the foundational skills and processes of facilitative mediation, along with the study of different forms of mediation and conflict resolution. Topics include: introduction to dispute settlement, principles of negotiation, mediation process, managing impasse, communication skills, agreement writing, community resources and referral process, and ethics. Successful completion of this class provides students with the foundational tools to mediate conflicts.
General Civil Mediation
Required for Conflict Resolution Specialist certificate.
This Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) approved MCR 2.411 training is a combined study of conflict resolution and negotiations using a process of facilitative mediation. Topics include: attorneys and mediation, conflict resolution concepts, court process, diversity issues, mediation process and techniques, negotiation dynamics, agreement writing and standards of conduct for mediators. Successful completion of this program satisfies the training requirement under MCR 2.411. Prerequisite: CES 0931 Basic Mediation or Juris Doctorate. The prerequisite applies to the Schoolcraft College certificate and not the Michigan SCAO requirements.
MI General Law for Non Attorney Mediators
Required for Conflict Resolution Specialist certificate.
Designed for non-attorney mediators, this class will address the basic laws, rules and guidelines governing mediators that will practice in the area of domestic relations and civil mediation in the Michigan court system. You will participate in classroom exercises and the lectures will include demonstrations. Prerequisite: CES 0931 Basic Mediation or Juris Doctorate.
Domestic Relations Mediation
Required for Conflict Resolution Specialist certificate.
This comprehensive Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) approved MCR 3.216 training class is for mediators who want to deal with all types of family (traditional and alternative lifestyles) and divorce issues. Topics include: family mediation theory and process, emotional issues, advanced communication skills, children’s issues, custody and support, parenting time arrangements, property division, power balancing, domestic violence and abuse, tax implications, pension and other financial concerns, building future relationships and ethics. Successful completion of this program satisfies the training requirement under Michigan Court Rule (MCR) 3.216. Prerequisite: CES 0931 Basic Mediation and 0935 Mediation Law or Juris Doctorate or other relevant experience/training may be considered. The prerequisite applies to the Schoolcraft College certificate and not the SCAO requirements.
Domestic Violence Screening Protocol
Required for Conflict Resolution Specialist certificate.
This SCAO MCR 3.216 approved training is designed for domestic relations mediators and structured around developing familiarity with and practical use of the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse/Neglect Screening Protocol for Domestic Relations Mediation. Topics include: determining the appropriateness of mediation as it relates to domestic abuse and child neglect, nature and dynamics of abuse, communication skills, specialized mediation process and techniques, balancing of power, personal protection orders and no contact orders, safe termination of mediation and confidentiality. Successful completion of this program is a requirement under Michigan Court Rule (MCR) 3.216 for qualified domestic relations mediators.
Arbitration & Evaluative Mediation
Required for Conflict Resolution Specialist certificate.
This training class will explain the role of a positive neutral along the dispute resolution continuum from facilitative mediation, evaluative mediation, med-arb, to arbitration. Topics include: alternative dispute resolution continuum, an introduction to evaluative mediation and med-arb, arbitration basics including case management, conducting the arbitration hearing, evidence evaluation, rendering a decision, post award procedures, legal and ethical issues in arbitration, challenges that confront arbitrators, and preserving neutrality. Prerequisite: CES 0931 Basic Mediation, CES 0938 General Civil Mediation and CES 0935 MI General Law. The prerequisite applies to the Schoolcraft College certificate and not the SCAO requirements.
