Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

Effective January 1, 2008: all entry level firefighter candidates must take the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) through the Conference of Western Wayne Firefighter Testing Program for all participating communities.

The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) is a sequence of eight separate events, requiring progression along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. The pass/fail sequence was developed to determine a firefighter candidate’s ability to perform essential simulated tasks consistent with firefighting. A confirmation packet is provided at registration. Please note:

  • A signed physician’s release form is required for the CPAT
  • A free orientation guide with recommended exercises is available upon request.
  • Practice sessions are available by appointment (for a fee)
