Glossary of Terms for Adult College Students

Admissions

The no-cost process in which one officially applies to Schoolcraft College and receives a student number. This can be done by mail using the form in the catalog or semester schedule; in person at the Admissions & Enrollment Center; or by submitting the information online via the Schoolcraft College website. The Admissions & Enrollment Center is located in McDowell Center, room MC245, (734) 462-4426

Registration

The process of signing up for a specific class.

The Admissions & Enrollment Center provides registration services to students for traditional and continuing education programs. Registration is available using current semester schedules by touchtone phone (734) 462-4800, online (http://webadvisor.schoolcraft.edu) or in person in the McDowell Center where posted. There is a $25.00 non-refundable registration fee per semester. The Registrar’s office is located in McDowell Center, room MC240, (734) 462-4426.

Traditional Credit

Credit awarded by Schoolcraft College toward completion of a degree or certificate program.

Continuing Education Units

Credit awarded by Schoolcraft College for personal growth and/or professional development. These credits are not considered traditional credit and cannot be applied toward a degree program/certificate. More information about Continuing Education & Professional Development

Financial Aid

Financial aid programs can provide students with options that may assist them in meeting educational expenses and achieving their educational goals. Need-based or non-need-based aid may include scholarships, grant programs, student employment and/or student loans. The Financial Aid Office is located in the McDowell Center, room MC260, (734) 462-4433.

Learning Assistance Center (LAC)

Academic and Assessment Services, which includes the Testing Center, Learning Assistance Center and Collegiate Skills, has as its primary function providing learning opportunities such as free tutoring, peer-assisted learning (PAL), mentoring program, Writing Fellows, disability services and test preparation. The Learning Assistance Center is located in the Bradner Library. The Testing Center is located in the McDowell Center, room MC210, (734) 462-4436.

Counseling

The Counseling Center provides quality services and professional staff to assist students in developing meaningful education, career and personal plans that are compatible with their life goals. Some areas in which counselors can be of assistance include deciding on a major, discussing curriculum, transfer planning, course scheduling, student orientation and graduation audits. The Counseling Center is located in the McDowell Center, room MC275, (734) 462-4429.

Career and Transfer Center (CTC)

Students are invited to visit the Career and Transfer Center (CTC) for career, employment, and transfer information.

Women’s Resource Center (WRC)

A center that provides the atmosphere and support for exploring educational, professional and personal plans for members of the community and campus. Volunteer peer counselors are available to assist both walk-in and telephone clients and are trained to listen to and help clients who wish to enter or re-enter college, research new career possibilities, find referrals for services or information or talk through a difficult situation. WRC special programs and services include scholarships, special populations program for single parents, displaced homemakers, those with limited English proficiency, those who are academically or economically disadvantaged, individuals with a disability and non-traditional job seekers; From Chocolate Chips to Micro Chips to Blue Chips (CHIPS), a program for Women in Transition; and divorce support services. Appointments are not required. The Women’s Resource Center is located in the McDowell Center, room MC225, (734) 462-4443.
