Healthcare Statistics for Health Information Management (2-2) 3 Cr. Hrs.

Course Description

This course introduces students to terminology, definitions and computational methodology of the basic and most frequently used health statistics. Topics examined include healthcare data collection, preparation, analysis and interpretation, cancer program requirements and vital statistics reporting.


(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Collect health data (such as data elements, data sets and databases).
  • Comprehend basic descriptive, institutional and healthcare vital statistics.
  • Compute census statistics.
  • Calculate length of stay and discharge statistics.
  • Calculate death and fatality rates.
  • Compute autopsy rates.
  • Use specialized databases to meet specific organization needs such as medical research and disease registries.
  • Interpret numerical data and derive meaningful conclusions.
  • Create tables and graphs to display statistical information.
  • Maintain data for clinical indices/databases/registries.
  • Present data for quality management, utilization management, risk management and other related studies.
  • Apply policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy of health data.
  • Verify timeliness, completeness, accuracy and appropriateness of data and data sources for patient care, management, billing reports, registries and/or databases.
