Principles of Health Information Management (2-2) 3 Cr. Hrs.
This course provides the student an introduction to the health information management profession. Educational and certification requirements are examined along with potential employment opportunities in the health information profession. The health information management department, its functions and the relationship to other departments is explored. Health record content, documentation requirements and the accrediting and licensing agencies that govern health information will be reviewed. Hands-on laboratory activities will help the student to gain proficiency in basic health information functions.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Explore the certification process of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
- Identify membership benefits of health information management professional associations.
- Collect and maintain health data (such as data elements, data sets and databases).
- Explain the development of a medical record from admission to discharge.
- Analyze primary and secondary purposes/uses of health information.
- Apply policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy of health data.
- Conduct analysis to ensure that documentation in the health record supports the diagnosis and reflects the patient's progress, clinical findings and discharge status.
- Verify timeliness, completeness, accuracy and appropriateness of data and data sources for patient care, management, billing reports, registries and/or databases.
- Monitor and apply organization-wide health record documentation guidelines.
- Apply policies and procedures to ensure organizational compliance with regulations and standards.
- Maintain the accuracy and completeness of the patient record as defined by organizational policy and external regulations and standards.
- Assist in preparing the organization for accreditation, licensing and/or certification surveys.
- Participate in the implementation of legal and regulatory requirements related to the health information infrastructure.
- Apply policies and procedures for access and disclosure of personal health information.
- Apply ethical standards of practice.
- Examine numbering and filing systems used in health information management.
- Compare and contrast paper, hybrid and electronic health record formats.
- Utilize library research techniques including online references and internet-based sites.
- Apply current laws, accreditation, licensure and certification standards related to health information initiatives from the national, state, local and facility levels.
