Life Drawing 1


Course Description

The emphasis of this course is direct observation and expression of the human form. Design and value relationships are studied, as are the superficial muscular and skeletal systems which affect the surface conformations of the human figure. Sessions on portraiture using an anatomical approach are included. Basic drawing concepts are reinforced through exploration of classic technique.

Prerequisites

(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Investigate or create works of art which encourage positive behavior.
  • Explain the ways in which the visual arts, life drawing in particular, can function within society.
  • Demonstrate the relationship and importance of figure drawing to other art forms.
  • Create drawings of the human figure that demonstrate accurate spatial relationships.
  • Create drawings of the human figure that demonstrate accurate value relationships.
  • Construct linear drawings which accurately record the basic conformation of a human figure.
  • Construct drawings that record light and shadow patterns on the topography of the human figure.
  • Construct a contour drawing of a human figure as it relates to spatial differentiation.
  • Demonstrate the basic compositional relationship of positive and negative space as it relates to placement of the figure on the drawing surfaces.
  • Research methods of life drawing from established Art History sources.
